На русский yet, already, still и so far переводятся как: "еще/уже", "уже", "все еще" и "вплоть до настоящего момента". Люди, изучающие английский язык, обычно впервые встречаются с этими словами, когда проходят сложные времена.

Как не запутаться в них? Давайте подробно и с примерами рассмотрим, когда и как они используются.

Yet

Произношение и перевод:

Yet / [йэт] - уже, ещё

Значение слова:
Перед моментом речи или определенным временем в прошлом; после момента речи или определенного времени в прошлом

Употребление:
Как правило, yet используется в вопросах или отрицаниях. В вопросах оно переводится как «уже», а в отрицаниях - как «еще». При этом yet всегда ставится в конец предложения.

Например, вопросы: Ты принял решение уже (yet)? Ты познакомился с новыми коллегами уже (yet)?

Примеры отрицаний: Я не дописал этот е-мейл еще (yet). Мы не были в этом музее еще (yet).

Пример:

Употребление:
Используем already , когда событие уже произошло на момент речи или уже произошло на какой-то момент в прошлом. Как правило, already употребляется в утверждениях (то есть, не в вопросах). Например: К тому времени, как гости пришли, я уже (already) всё приготовил. Мы уже (already) обсудили этот вопрос. Джон уже (already) здесь, пойдем поздороваемся.

Иногда already употребляется в вопросах. Это делается в двух случаях.

1) Чтобы выразить удивление оттого, что что-то произошло слишком быстро: Как, сейчас полночь уже (already)?

2) Когда в ответ на вопрос мы ожидаем услышать «да»: Ты ведь приготовил презентацию уже (already)? Ты же позвонил маме уже (already)?

Употребление:
Мы используем still , когда хотим подчеркнуть, что ситуация на данный момент еще не закончилась. Например: Я все еще (still) жду твоего ответа. Мой сын все еще (still) в школе.

Речь также может идти об определенном моменте в прошлом: Вчера в 22.00 я все еще (still) был на работе. На прошлой неделе я был еще (still) болен и поэтому находился дома.

Если у нас отрицательное предложение, то это может означать что-то, что до сих пор не наступило (хотя должно было бы). Например: Мы все еще (still) ничего не решили. Он до сих пор (still) не подготовил отчет.

So far

Употребление:
Мы используем so far , когда речь идет о некой ситуации, которая продолжается вплоть до момента речи, однако в будущем все может измениться .

Например: Пока что (so far) всё идёт хорошо. Пока что (so far) я сделал только часть работы. Пока что (so far) он не дал нам ответа.

Пример:

So far the weather has been good.
Вплоть до текущего момента погода была хорошая.

All our attempts to find him were unsuccessful so far .
Все наши попытки найти его не увенчались успехом пока что .

В чем разница?

Yet - переводится как «уже» (в вопросах), «еще» (в отрицаниях). Например: Мы не обсуждали этот вопрос еще (yet).

Already - переводится как «уже» (в утверждениях). Например: Я уже (already) заказал пиццу.

В вопросах выражает удивление или выдает наше внутреннее убеждение в том, что что-то все-таки произошло. Например: Неужели ты уходишь уже (already)?

Still - используем, когда говорим - что-то все еще продолжается (и это главное). Например: Я все еще (still) жду свою пиццу.

So far - используем, когда что-то продолжается вплоть до текущего момента, но ситуация может поменяться в будущем. Например: Пока что (so far) день был продуктивным.

Обратите внимание: это слово очень похоже на yet ! В отрицательных предложениях они взаимозаменяемы:

yet .
Полиция еще не нашла украденную машину.

The police haven’t found the stolen car so far .
Полиция пока что не нашла украденную машину.

В положительных утверждениях yet просто не может использоваться, поэтому там возможно только so far :

The police have caught 4 members of the gang so far .

Иногда so far можно перепутать со still . Здесь важно, что, используя still , мы, прежде всего, хотим передать, что действие до сих пор продолжается и конца ему не видно:

I still feel bad about what happened.

You still haven’t answered my question!
Ты до сих пор не ответил на мой вопрос!

Для so far важнее оттенок «пока что состояние вещей такое, но в будущем все может измениться».

So far I feel really bad about what happened but I’m sure I’ll calm down in a couple of days.

So far he hasn’t answered any questions, but the tabloid journalists are very persistent.
